Policlinico San Donato’s Cardiac Surgery Department is the most active Italian cardiac surgery program with more than 53.000 patients treated. All cardiac pathologies are treated in all ages, from new-born to very old patients. It is a national and international referral centre for coronaropathies, valve pathologies and aortic pathologies.

Coronary Artery Disease

The department is a centre of excellence in the treatment of coronary artery disease: more than 22000 patients have been operated for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG). Heart failure surgery is performed routinely, according to guidelines. Revascularization in patients with low ejection fraction is performed with optimal outcomes. Surgical ventricular restoration was developed and standardized in the hospital. More than 1900 patients benefited from this procedure and this represents the most important experience in the world. Great expertise was achieved in the treatment, with original techniques, of functional mitral regurgitation.

Valve Surgery

Valve surgery represents one of the major interests of this centre, focusing on valve repair: mitral, aortic and tricuspid valves are repaired in the vast majority of cases. If the valve has to be changed, because of the pathology, all the best devices are used according to the clinical conditions of the patient. Valve-preserving surgery in aortic position is performed when indicated. The hospital is very well known for the surgery of thoracic aorta in all portions: ascending, arch and descending. It also has an important experience in the treatment of cardiac tumours.

High-risk Surgery

Thanks to great experience in every field of cardiac surgery, the hospital performs operations normally considered at very high risk. It accepts patients for redux surgery that are sent from other hospitals and other cardiac surgery departments. It operates patients on dialysis as well. It is a referral centre for the medical and surgical treatment of acute endocarditis.

New techniques and haemostasis/coagulation care

It offers to patients the most physiological and least invasive treatment. The strategy to perform cardiac surgery without blood allows the Unit to treat 63% of adult patients with no use of blood and its derivates throughout the whole hospital stay. The patient coagulation pathway is studied in the operating room, in a dedicated laboratory, to ensure a personalized coagulative care. It considers also very important the impact of skin incision on the well-being of the patient: it makes very small incisions and the closure is performed with plastic surgery techniques to achieve the best aesthetic result.
