Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT)

What is it?

This technique uses beams of radiation conformed and adapted to the shape of the target volume, ensuring, compared to the so-called conventional radiotherapy, not only a higher dose to the tumor mass, but also a greater sparing of adjacent healthy structures.

Average duration of the intervention:
1-40 sessions
Average duration of hospitalization:
none

When is this procedure indicated?

Conformal radiation therapy can be used to treat the following malignancies: cerebral, cervical-cephalic, mammary, thoracic, pancreatic, male genito-urinary, gynecological, abdominal, pelvic, hemolymphopoietic system.

How is it performed?

The procedure for the elaboration of treatment plan includes execution of a centering examination that, according to the site to be irradiated, can be represented by a smc CT, cms CT, CT/PET, etc. 3D-CRT uses beams of radiation conformed and adapted to the shape of the target volume, ensuring, compared to the so-called conventional radiotherapy, not only a higher dose to the tumor mass, but also a greater sparing of adjacent healthy structures.

Recovery

Short-term complications

The possible acute effects, generally of modest entity and duration, are related to the irradiated site and depend on the inflammation generated by the irradiation. Depending on the irradiated site, therapies to prevent these effects are prepared.

Long-term complications

Possible late effects, generally rare, are related to the irradiated site and are managed during follow-up visits.
