Fetal MRI

What is it?

Magnetic resonance is a non invasive method of imaging based upon magnetic fields. This exam can be safely and effectively ised to study the fetus, particularly for assessment of central nervous system. In these cases the exam is carried ot with no contrast agents.

When is this exam indicated?

Fetal MRI is carried out in case of prenatal diagnosis of open spina bifida.

How is it performed?

The pregnant lady enters the MR machine which is a large metal tube. The exam lasts about 20 minutes, the mother needs to stay still and the images quality alco increases if the fetus does not move. Therefore, generally we ask to the pregnant lady to fast for about 3 hours prior to the exam. 

Contraindications

  • Cardiac pace-maker;
  • Metal protesis;
  • Claustrophobia
