Corneal transplantation

What is it?

Corneal transplantation is a surgical procedure mainly utilized to improve vision in patients affected by severe corneal disease. Depending on the location of the pathological process, corneal transplantation can be performed using full-thickness grafts (penetrating keratoplasty) or lamellar grafts such as those utilized for deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) and endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK and DMEK).

When is this procedure indicated?

Some indications include keratoconus, anterior and posterior corneal dystrophies, corneal infections not responsive to therapy and post traumatic corneal opacities.

How is it performed?

The procedures are performed in the operating theater and generally require explantation of the diseased tissue and replacement with a donor graft.
