First pass angiocardioscintigraphy

What is it?

It is an examination that allows to analyse some parameters of the heart function through the administration of various elements marked with Tc-99m: among the most used there are the red blood cells, in case it is desired to perform subsequently also the equilibrium angiocardioscintigraphy, or the tracers of myocardial perfusion.

Thanks to first-pass angiocardioscintigraphy, the following parameters can be obtained: ejection fraction (an index representing the percentage of blood pumped by the heart after each contraction), parietal kinetics, quantification of a possible left-right shunt.

When is this exam indicated?

The examination is performed in case of:

  • study of myocardial contractility, for functional evaluation, prognosis and monitoring of heart disease in particular of the right side of the heart;
  • diagnosis and quantitative evaluation of the left-right shunt.

How is it performed?

By administering a rapid infusion, intravenously, of radiopharmaceuticals that allow to evaluate, in particular during the first passage in the right ventricular chamber, the changes in volume and kinase and therefore allow to give an estimate of myocardial function. The patient does not require any preparation.

The duration of the examination is about 15 minutes.

Contraindications

In case there are contraindications to the use of ionizing radiation.
