Sequential renal scintigraphy

What is it?

This examination is used to evaluate segmental and total renal function and patency of the excretory tracts, for the identification of obstructive pathologies and for the diagnosis of neurovascular hypertension

In addition to the basic examination, performed by intravenous injection of different types of radiopharmaceuticals (99mTc-DPTA, 99mTc-MAG3), pharmacological tests can also be performed:

- the FUROSEMIDE test (Lasix) for the evaluation of the presence of possible urinary obstructions

- the CAPTOPRIL test for the study of arterial hypertension of probable renal origin. In this case, a second control scintigraphy may be necessary in a few days.

When is this exam indicated?

The examination is used for the evaluation of medical nephropathy (evaluation of functional damage), obstructive nephropathy (stenosis of the pyeloureteral joint, functional obstruction), evaluation of residual function after surgery, nephro-vascular hypertension, renal transplantation, evaluation of malformations (horseshoe kidney, polycystic pathology).

  • renal insufficiency
  • obstructive pathologies
  • cystic pathologies
  • malformations
  • stones
  • neoplasia

How is it performed?

The examination lasts about 20 minutes, the duration increases if pharmacological tests are involved or post examination control is required.

The patient will be asked to lie down still on a special couch, with the gamma camera placed underneath, and in this position the radiopharmaceutical will be injected into the vein and immediately delivered to the kidney.

Fasting is not required, while a good hydration is necessary (the patient must drink 2 glasses of water before the administration of the radiotracer).

Interference with the following medications should be avoided: diuretics, calcium channel blockers (increase renal function) and ACE inhibitors (reduce renal filtration and flow).

Time of stay in the ward: from 30 minutes to about 1.30h.
