Michele De Bonis

Biography

Professor Michele De Bonis works at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Advanced Treatment and Research at the Ospedale San Raffaele Clinical Research Institute in Milan, as well as Associate Professor of Cardiac Surgery and Director of the School of Cardiac Surgery Specialization at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, where he specialized in cardiac surgery. In 1998, he received his US Physician Degree (USMLE exam) and became a member of the UK Medical Association. He gained experience in cardiac surgery departments abroad. He worked at St. George Hospital in London and studied at the Brugmann University Hospital in Brussels and German Heart Institute in Berlin.

During his career, he was engaged in cardiac surgery for adults, focusing on traditional, minimally invasive and percutaneous surgical methods of mitral and tricuspid valve repair. He invented an original device for the transcatheter treatment of tricuspid regurgitation. He performed more than 5500 extensive cardiac surgery, of which about 3000 as the first surgeon in the department headed by him.

Over the years, he has gained extensive experience in the use of all circulatory support systems, from extracorporeal systems to partially implantable devices and total artificial heart (TAH), especially as an alternative to heart transplant (destination therapy).

He has held prestigious positions at European and international levels, namely, the Chairman of the working group on Cardiovascular Surgery of the European Cardiological Society, Chairman of the special group on Mitral and Tricuspid Valve Surgery of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Heart Valve Society, European advisor to the Council on Cardiovascular Surgery of the American cardiological association.

He fell under numerous ad hoc expert groups within the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, American Heart Association, European Society of Cardiology, Heart Valve Society and Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery. In particular, he is one of the authors of the European guidelines on valve heart disease and cardiovascular disease in pregnancy. For these achievements, he was awarded the title of Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and American Heart Association (FAHA).

Professor De Bonis is a visiting professor of Cardiac Surgery at the Plymouth NHS Trust in the UK and the University of Cape Town in South Africa, lecturer at the European School of Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS Academy) and a visiting professor at the Polytechnic University of Milan.

He is the author and co-author of more than 190 publications (177 peer-reviewed articles, H index is 35, total number of citations is 9252) and 18 chapters in books on cardiac surgery. He has given over 150 lectures and presentations at national and international congresses. He is the co-publisher of a book on edge-to-edge mitral valve repair and is a reviewer for 16 international journals.

Between 2008 and 2012, he won two national research competitions. In fact, he is the CCM (National Center for Disease Prevention and Control) Project leader and co-speaker on Bioactive Surface Research to Optimize Left Ventricular Support Devices (LVADs).

He is the Assistant Editor of the International Journal of Cardiology and a member of the editorial board of various international journals, including the Interactive Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and Annals of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Diseases. In addition, he is a reviewer in 16 international journals such as the European Heart Journal, British Medical Journal, Circulation, Lancet, Heart, Nature Reviews in Cardiology, Journal of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, European Journal of Cardio-thoracic surgery, Annals of thoracic surgery, American Journal of Cardiology, Expert Reviews in Cardiology, and Journal of Heart Valve Disease.
