يعمل البروفيسور ميكائيلي دي بونيس في قسم جراحة القلب والبحث والعلاج القلبي المتقدم في مستشفى سان رافاييلي (IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele) في ميلانو، بالإضافة إلى كونه أستاذ مشارك في جراحة القلب ومدير معهد التخصص في جراحة القلب في جامعة فيتا-سالوتي سان رافاييلي في ميلانو. 

تخرج من كلية الطب والجراحة وتخصص في جراحة القلب في جامعة القلب المقدس الكاثوليكية (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore) في روما، ونال في عام 1998 رخصة مزاولة المهنة الأمريكية (USMLE exam) وأصبح عضوًا في جمعية الأطباء البريطانية، كما اكتسب خبرة متنوعة في أقسام جراحة القلب في الخارج، حيث عمل في مستشفى سانت جورج (St. George Hospital) في لندن، ودرس في مستشفى بروجمان الجامعي (Brugmann University Hospital) في بروكسل ومعهد القلب الألماني (German Heart Institute) في برلين.

البروفيسور ميكائيلي دي بونيس كرس نفسه خلال مسيرته المهنية إلى جراحة القلب للبالغين، مركزًا على الأساليب الجراحية التقليدية والتدخلات الجراحية القلبية طفيفة التوغل، بالإضافة إلى التدخلات الجراحية الشريانية لإصلاح الصمام الميترالي والصمام الثلاثي الشرفات. اخترع جهازًا جديداً لعلاج ارتجاع الصمام الثلاثي الشرفات بالقسطرة. قام أيضاً بأكثر من 5500 عملية جراحة قلبية شاملة، منها حوالي 3000 كجراح رئيسي في القسم الذي يترأسه.

اكتسب خبرة واسعة على مدى السنوات في استخدام جميع أنظمة دعم الدورة الدموية، من أنظمة خارج الجسم إلى أجهزة زرع جزئي أوالقلب الاصطناعي الكامل (TAH)، خاصة كبديل لزراعة القلب (العلاج الموجه). 

شغل البروفيسور ميكائيلي دي بونيس مناصب مرموقة على المستويات الأوروبية والدولية، وهي رئيس مجموعة العمل في جراحة القلب للجمعية الأوروبية للقلب (European Cardiological Society)، ورئيس المجموعة الخاصة بجراحة الصمام الميترالي التاجي والصمام الثلاثي الشرفات في الجمعية الأوروبية لجراحة القلب والصدر (European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery) وجمعية صمام القلب (Heart Valve Society)، كما شغل منصب المستشار الأوروبي لمجلس جراحة القلب في الجمعية الأمريكية للقلب (American cardiological association). كنا أيضا غضواً في العديد من مجموعات الخبراء المؤقتة داخل الجمعية الأوروبية لجراحة القلب (European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery)، وجمعية القلب الأمريكية (American Heart Association)، والجمعية الأوروبية لأمراض القلب (European Society of Cardiology)، وجمعية الصمامات القلبية (Heart Valve Society)، والجمعية الإيطالية لجراحة القلب (Società Italiana di Cardiochirurgia).

البروفيسور دي بونيس هو أستاذ زائر في جراحة القلب في المستشفيات الجامعية بليموث للخدمة الوطنية للصحة (University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust) في المملكة المتحدة وجامعة كيب تاون (University of Cape Town) في جمهورية جنوب أفريقيا، كما انه محاضر في المدرسة الأوروبية لجراحة القلب والصدر (EACTS Academy - European School of Cardiothoracic Surgery) وأستاذ زائر في جامعة البوليتكنيك في ميلانو (Politecnico di Milano).

هو مؤلف وشارك في تأليف أكثر من 190 منشورًا علمياً (177 مقالة (177 مقالة محكمة، مؤشر هيرش الخاص به هو 35 وإجمالي عدد الاستشهادات هو 9252)، و18 فصلاً في كتب عن جراحة القلب، كما قدم أكثر من 150 محاضرة وعروض في المؤتمرات الوطنية والدولية. هو مشارك في نشر كتاب عن إصلاح الصمام الميترالي من الحافة إلى الحافة، وهو مراجع لـ 16 مجلة دولية.

بين عامي 2008 و2012 فاز البروفيسور ميكائيلي دي بونيس بمسابقتي بحث وطنيتين، ففي واقع الأمر هو قائد مشروع المركز الوطني للوقاية من الأمراض ومكافحتها (CCM - Centro Nazionale per la Prevenzione e il Controllo delle Malattie) والمتحدث المشارك في بحث حيوي لتحسين أجهزة مساعدة البطين الأيسر (LVADs).

He is the author and co-author of more than 190 publications (177 peer-reviewed articles, H index is 35, total number of citations is 9252) and 18 chapters in books on cardiac surgery. He has given over 150 lectures and presentations at national and international congresses. He is the co-publisher of a book on edge-to-edge mitral valve repair and is a reviewer for 16 international journals.

He is the Assistant Editor of the International Journal of Cardiology and the editorial committee of various international journals, including the Interactive Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and Annals of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Diseases. In addition, he is a reviewer in 16 international journals such as the European Heart Journal, British Medical Journal, Circulation, Lancet, Heart, Nature Reviews in Cardiology, Journal of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, European Journal of Cardio-thoracic surgery, Annals of thoracic surgery, American Journal of Cardiology, Expert Reviews in Cardiology, and Journal of Heart Valve Disease.
