Ultrasound

What is it?

Ultrasound, uses a probe which produces sound waves to study the body’s tissues, in particular soft tissues. Doppler ultrasound can investigate blood flow throughout vessels in the body. Ultrasound is a completely non-invasive technique that uses non-ionizing radiation such as sound waves.

When is this exam indicated?

Ultrasound can be used to investigate abdominal organs, the musculoskeleletal system, the thyroid as well as vascular structures. It aids in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. It is also used to guide needle biopsies and drainage placement.

How is it performed?

In order to facilitate ultrasound wave penetration, gel is applied on the skin.  An external probe (or transducer) is  placed in this area. The ultrasound waves bounce on organs and the signals are collected and transformed into images.   No matter what district is under study, it is advisable to refrain from eating from at least 6 hours. Still water consumption is permitted, in certain cases necessary. Details for specific exams will be provided by staff when you book your ultrasound. Neonatal and pediatric patients and those with specific conditions should advise staff when booking the exam.
