Fabio Ciceri

Biography

Professor Fabio Ciceri is the Head of the Department of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation and the Department of Hematological Oncology of the San Raffaele Research Hospital in Milan. Since 2018, he has been Full Professor of Hematology at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, where he also runs the School of Specialization in Hematology.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pavia, followed by a specialization in rheumatology at the University of Ferrara and a specialization in hematology at the University of Milan.

Professor Fabio Ciceri is active in the field of hematology, treating acute leukemia, aggressive lymphomas, myeloproliferative neoplasms and anemia, participating in the development of clinical trials, both observational and prospective and interventional. Over the years of his career, he has acquired broad skills in the field of autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation using any source tissue and from all available donors (compatible relative, non-blood, haploidentical relative) for the treatment of blood cancers, solid tumors and non-neoplastic diseases such as autoimmune, neuroinflammatory diseases and hemoglobinopathy.

His research activities in this area have made transplantation from a partially matched haploidentical donor available as a possible treatment for high-risk hematologic cancers. Since 1996, Professor Ciceri has been principal investigator in the clinical development of advanced cell therapy, gene therapy and regenerative medicine programs in both oncological and non-oncological diseases. Thus, he contributed to the development of the first advanced cell therapy for the treatment of blood cancer using the suicidal HSV-TK gene to control donor lymphocytes, as well as to the development of gene therapy for the treatment of primary immunodeficiency, metabolic diseases and beta-thalassemia.

His works have been published in such journals as the Annals of Neurology, Science, Bone Marrow and Transplantation, Blood, Cell Transplantation, New England Journal of Medicine, Hematology Oncology, and Lancet Oncology. He cooperates as a reviewer with journals the Blood, Leukemia, Haematologica, Bone Marrow Transplantation and the European Research Council (ERC).

He is a member of expert groups such as the Italian Society of Hematology (SIE), Italian Group for Bone Marrow Transplantation (GITMO), of which he currently chairs, Lombardy Hematology Network (REL), Italian Group for Hematological Diseases in Adults (GIMEMA), European Blood and Marrow Transplantation Group (EBMTG), European Hematology Association (EHA), International Network of Cancer Trial Research (INCTR), International Cardio Oncology Society (ICOS), and European Technology Platform for Nanomedicine (ETPN).
