Biography

Dr. Emanuel Della Torre is a rheumatologist, allergist, and immunologist at the Clinical Unit of Immunology, Rheumatology, Allergology, and Rare Diseases (UnIRAR), directed by Professor Lorenzo Dagna.

He graduated with honors and distinction in Medicine and Surgery (2008), specialized in Allergology and Clinical Immunology (2014), and earned a PhD in Basic and Applied Immunology (2018) from the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan. Since September 2021, he has held the position of Researcher with teaching assignments in the degree courses in Medicine and Surgery, MD Program, Physiotherapy, Nursing, and Biotechnology.

In his clinical practice, Dr. Della Torre treats patients with immuno-rheumatological conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthropathy, Sjogren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, gout, vasculitis, immunodeficiencies, osteoporosis, and allergological conditions such as ocular rhinitis, asthma, chronic urticaria, and food allergies.

Within UnIRAR, he is the Coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Clinic dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of rare fibrosing diseases such as IgG4-related disease, retroperitoneal fibrosis, sclerosing mesenteritis, autoimmune pancreatitis, sarcoidosis, orbital pseudotumor, and Castleman disease. He also collaborates with the Pancreas Unit and the Lymphoma Unit as an immuno-rheumatologist consultant.

Thanks to a profound integration between clinical and laboratory activities, Dr. Della Torre is constantly engaged in translational research projects on immuno-rheumatological diseases. His research focuses on translating mechanistic study results into potential new therapies. After working for three years in the United States at the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Dr. Della Torre returned to Italy in 2018 to lead a research laboratory at the Division of Genetics and Cell Biology at San Raffaele Research Hospital.

As of January 2024, Dr. Della Torre is the author of over 150 scientific publications in international journals (H-index 42 according to Scopus). His work has contributed to the characterization of IgG4-related disease, of which he is considered a "World Expert" according to Expertscape. He is the Coordinator of the European study group on IgG4-related disease (European Reference Network - ERN) established by the European Commission and the Principal Investigator of numerous clinical studies conducted at UnIRAR aimed at identifying new therapies for IgG4-related disease. Dr. Della Torre is also a member of numerous national and international scientific societies such as the Italian Society of Rheumatology (SIR), the Italian Society of Allergology, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (SIAAIC), and the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR). He has been a speaker at numerous national and international congresses on immunology, rheumatology, allergology, and internal medicine.
