Biography
Professor Alberto Zangrillo is the head of the General Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit, Cardio-Thoraco-Vascular, and the Single Area of Cardiac Intensive Care and Cardiothoracic Surgery, Clinical Area Manager at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan, and collaborates with the Casa di Cura La Madonnina.
At the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, he holds the positions of Pro-Rector for Clinical Activities and Full Professor of Anesthesia and Intensive Care.
His academic journey began at the University of Milan, where he graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1983, specializing in Anesthesia and Intensive Care three years later, and then continued at significant European centers such as Queen Charlotte Hospital in London, Hospital de la Santa Creu Pau in Barcelona, the Cardio-thoracic Centre in Monte Carlo, Hetzer Deutsches Herzzentrum in Berlin, and Ospedale San Raffaele.
Professor Alberto Zangrillo is one of the top ten doctors in the world in recent years, in terms of publications in the fields of “anesthesia” and “intensive care” (source: Scopus), with over 800 publications, more than 500 of which are indexed in international journals (cited more than 21,000 times, H-index 67), including randomized studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Circulation, and the British Medical Journal.
He has won several research grants, including the Ministry of Health’s Finalized Research Grant, an AIFA Independent Research Grant on drugs in 2012, and a Capital Account Grant in the same year (as well as other grants and projects funded by the Lombardy Region). As Principal Investigator, he often participates in 48 randomized research protocols approved by the Ethics Committee of Ospedale San Raffaele.
In research, among many pursued lines, the main ones include advanced circulatory and ventilation support (ECMO, VAD, artificial heart), acute heart failure treatment, non-invasive ventilation (in intensive care and general wards), alternative anticoagulant therapies in intensive care, optimization of perioperative hemostasis, cardioprotection from halogenated agents, prevention of perioperative mortality, treatment of perioperative acute myocardial infarction, prevention and treatment of perioperative acute renal failure and critical patient organ damage, and sepsis in intensive care.
In addition to medical awards and institutional roles, he has been honored with the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and Commander by Presidents Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Giorgio Napolitano.
