Oncohematology

Ospedale San Raffaele is a center of excellence at the national and international level for the treatment of blood cancers, including acute leukemias, myelodysplastic syndromes, and myeloproliferative disorders. In collaboration with global research networks like NILG, GIMEMA, and EBMT, San Raffaele’s Oncohematology Department is actively involved in phase I-III multicenter trials to evaluate new drugs and therapies.

Research at Ospedale San Raffaele includes maintaining a biobank with biological samples from patients with acute leukemias and myelodysplastic syndromes, which supports both local preclinical studies and larger-scale molecular research across multicenter networks. The team has developed expertise in monitoring biomarkers, such as WT1 and NPM1, for predicting minimal residual disease and recurrence, especially after allogeneic transplantation. The department has also distinguished itself in the intensive treatment of elderly patients, focusing on adapting transplantation therapies to improve outcomes in this high-risk group.
