Umberto Favetta
Biography
Dr. Umberto Favetta is a proctologist and the Head of the Proctology and Pelvic Floor Surgery Unit at the Istituto di Cura Città di Pavia. He also collaborates with the San Raffaele Cardinal Schuster outpatient clinic.
He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery in 1987 and obtained his professional license the same year. He earned his PhD in Surgical Pathophysiology in 1992 from the University of Palermo, in association with the Gustave Roussy Institute in Villejuif, Paris, France.
Dr. Favetta specialized in General Surgery at the University of Messina in 1995.
He has gained significant experience in Anorectal and Pelvic Ultrasound Diagnostics at major international diagnostic centers, including universities in Munich, Saarbrücken, Paris, London, and Malmö.
He later focused on the use of 3D rotating probe transanal ultrasound with M. Hünerbein at the Department of Surgical Oncology at Humboldt University in Berlin.
A General Surgeon committed to continuous learning and the development of both diagnostic techniques and advanced minimally invasive procedures, he has also trained at prestigious national and international centers, acquiring substantial expertise in Functional Diagnostics and Surgical Therapy for both Anorectal and Pelvic disorders, ranging from morphological and functional diagnostics (manometry, pudendal nerve latency determination) to surgical activities.
Dr. Favetta has successfully dedicated himself to the surgical and rehabilitative treatment of:
- Anorectal and Pelvic prolapse disorders,
- Anorectal sepsis,
- Uro-fecal incontinence,
- Abdominopelvic functional syndromes such as dyssynergia,
- Anorectal oncological disorders.
He has performed over 6,000 surgical procedures as the primary operator throughout his 36-year career, developing skills in minimally invasive surgical techniques for Colorectal and Pelvic disorders.
Since 1994, he has conducted over 35,000 endocavitary (3D Rotating Probe Transanal) and Pelvic ultrasound examinations as an operator.
From 1995 to 1998, he served as a member of the Fifth National Commission (relationships with Entities and Companies) in the UCP Club chaired by Prof. Mario Pescatori.
He has been a member of SIC since 1987 and, in collaboration, co-authored the 2003 guidelines for rectal cancer diagnostics. Since November 2004, he has been an Honorary Member of the Cuban Society of Coloproctology and a European Representative for the Iberolatinoamerican Society of Coloproctology.
He currently serves as an elected National Councilor for the second term at the SIUCP National Council (December 2022) and as National Coordinator of the SIUCP's Ultrasound Diagnostic Section, of which he has been a member since its founding.
He is highly active in medical professional training, organizing and directing courses and workshops.
As an author, Dr. Favetta has contributed to the drafting and publication of over 90 scientific papers on proctological and pelvic rectal disorders in national and international indexed journals, including:
