Biography

Dr. Rossana Caldara is an endocrinologist specialized in diabetes and metabolic diseases. She is the Head of the Transplant Medicine program within the Regenerative Medicine and Transplant Unit, led by Professor Lorenzo Piemonti.

Dr. Caldara graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1987. In 1992, she completed her specialization in Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases.

Her training includes prestigious fellowships:

  • 1989-1990: Fellowship in Transplant Medicine and Clinical Immunology, Urology and Transplant Surgery at Hôpital Édouard Herriot in Lyon, France.
  • 1992-1993: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Diabetology and Metabolic Diseases at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute.

As the Head of the Transplant Medicine program, Dr. Caldara is responsible for the care, information, and treatment of patients requiring internal medicine expertise, as well as those undergoing kidney, kidney/pancreas, and pancreatic islet transplants. She oversees the patient's entire care pathway, from admission to discharge.

In addition to her ward duties, she conducts regular outpatient clinics and works closely with colleagues in the unit on on-call duties for urgent clinical care, both internally and externally, for transplant patients.

Dr. Caldara is also deeply involved in research activities following GCP (Good Clinical Practice) standards, managing treatment strategies and research protocols. She collaborates with the unit director on managerial and organizational tasks and maintains connections with pharmaceutical companies and internal and external services, including the North Italy Transplant program and the National Transplant Center.

Since 2018, Dr. Caldara has been the Coordinator for Phase 1 clinical trials.

Academically, she is committed to her role as a university tutor at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and is actively involved in national and international transplant-related engagements.

Dr. Caldara is a member of the Italian Society of Diabetology (SID), the Italian Society of Nephrology (SIN), the Italian Society for Organ Transplantation (SITO), and served on the Operational Committee of the SIN-SITO College for the 2020-2023 term.
