Riccardo Rosati

Biography

Professor Riccardo Rosati is the head of the Gastroenterological Surgery Unit and the Week Surgery Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan, and collaborates with Casa di Cura La Madonnina.

Since 2014, he has been Director of the School of Specialization in General Surgery at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan where, a year later, he received the appointment as Full Professor of General Surgery.

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan, he obtained specialization in General Surgery at the same university. His training continues at the University of Turin, where he specializes in Thoracic-Pulmonary Surgery.

His medical practice focuses on surgery of digestive system, using both traditional and minimally invasive approach. Specifically, he treats mainly neoplastic and benign diseases of the esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum, while part of his background are hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. Within the scope of endocrine surgery, which is the area of responsibility of the department he heads, he performs laparoscopic interventions for adrenal diseases, preferring, in turn, minicervicotomy of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. The operating units directed by Prof. Riccardo Rosati count more than 25,000 surgical interventions performed.

Evident are his merits in the organization and development of various surgical fields (General, Minimally Invasive, Emergency, Trauma) and Day Surgery. He is the first specialist in Italy to introduce outpatient hospitalization for laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia, such as cholecystectomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall for hernia and laparocele.

Under his direction, San Raffaele Hospital has received a significant increase in oncologic surgery of the digestive system, becoming the first Italian center for esophageal surgery since 2015 (AGENAS PNE data). Within the same facility, two multidisciplinary specialist centers were established: one is dedicated to the study, research and treatment of the pathology of the digestive tract, while the other deals with thyroid diseases.

He is the author of more than 300 scientific publications and an active participant of national and international congresses. He also holds a range of important positions in scientific groups: Prof. Riccardo Rosati is a member, among others, of ACS (American College of Surgeons), ESA (European Surgical Association), ISDE (International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus) and SISME (Italian Society for the Study of Esophageal Diseases) of which he is also a founding member.  In 2018, he was elected General Secretary of ESDE (European Society for Diseases of the Esophagus).
