Riccardo Rosati

Professor Riccardo Rosati, Full Professor of General Surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan, is the Head of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Unit and the Week Surgery Unit at the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. He collaborates with other facilities within the group, including Casa di Cura La Madonnina in Milan. Since 2014, he has been the Director of the School of Specialization in General Surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan, a school renowned both nationally and internationally.

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1980, he obtained specialization in General Surgery at the same university in 1985. His training continues at the University of Turin, where he specializes in Thoracic-Pulmonary Surgery in 1988.

His medical practice focuses on surgery of digestive system, using both traditional and minimally invasive approach. Specifically, he treats mainly neoplastic and benign diseases of the esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum, while part of his background are hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. Within the scope of endocrine surgery, which is the area of responsibility of the department he heads, he performs laparoscopic interventions for adrenal diseases, preferring, in turn, minicervicotomy of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. The operating units directed by Prof. Riccardo Rosati count more than 25,000 surgical interventions performed in the Operational Units he has directed from 1996 to today.

He has actively contributed to the development of various surgical techniques, especially promoting the spread of minimally invasive surgery (first procedures in 1989) in general surgery, emergency surgery, trauma surgery, and day surgery. He is the first specialist in Italy to introduce outpatient hospitalization for laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia, such as cholecystectomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall for hernia and laparocele.

Under his leadership, San Raffaele Hospital has seen a significant increase in oncological surgery of the digestive system, becoming by far the leading center in Italy for esophageal surgery volumes, and among the top centers for stoma, colon, and rectal surgery. Within the same facility, he established and coordinates two specialized multidisciplinary groups: one dedicated to the study, research, and treatment of diseases of the upper digestive tract (esophagus and stomach), and the other focused on colorectal diseases.

He is the author of more than 478 scientific publications and an active participant of national and international congresses. Professor Riccardo Rosati is a member of many scientific societies, including SIC (Italian Society of Surgery), GIRCG (Italian Research Group on Gastric Cancer), ACS (American College of Surgeons), ESA (European Surgical Association), ISDE (International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus), ESDE (European Society for Diseases of the Esophagus), of which he was president from 2021 to 2023, and SISME (Italian Society for the Study of Esophageal Diseases), of which he is also a founding member.
