Marco Riva

Dr. Marco Riva is a neurosurgeon of the Oncological Neurosurgery Group of the IRCCS Istituto Galeazzi.

In 2008, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Vita San Raffaele University in Milan, and in 2015 received a specialization in neurosurgery at the University of Milan.

After his research, Dr. Riva improves his professional skills through clinical and surgical experience and research activities, improving through scholarship programs in qualified international centers.

Dr. Riva performs operations on a planned and urgent basis, performing and participating in cranial interventions for intra- and non-axial lesions in gliomas, brain metastases, meningiomas, lymphomas, cavernous angiomas, neuromas, tumors, lesions and expansive cysts of the brain and cerebellum as a whole, osteomas, DNET (dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor), brain lesions associated with epilepsy and with disorders of cerebrospinal fluid dynamics such as hydrocephalus, pseudotumors of the brain (benign intracranial hypertension), with injuries or traumatic outcomes (hematomas, fractures), with stereotactic interventions in frameless mode. 

He also deals with the diagnosis and treatment of major spinal pathologies of a degenerative, traumatic and tumor nature, such as disc prolapses, spondylolisthesis, stenosis, myelopathy, fractures and tumors.

Dr. Riva uses in his surgical activity the help of neurophysiological and neuropsychological methods of monitoring and mapping higher brain functions, anesthesia of wakefulness (anesthesia sleep-wakefulness, sleep-wakefulness-sleep), complex systems of neuronavigation (CT, MRI, PET) and intraoperative imaging (3D X-ray, CT, ultrasound). Clinical activities are supported by interdisciplinary meetings and discussions.

For many years, Dr. Riva has devoted himself to various areas of research on the study of pathologies of the central nervous system and the development of research and treatment methods.

Research activities and others. Riva has also gained a foothold by participating in various international studies and receiving research grants.

Since September 2020, he has also been a member of the Educational Committee of the European Association of Neuro-Oncology (EANO).

As the university researcher, Dr. Marco Riva participates in teaching activities at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and at the Specialized School of Neurosurgery of the University of Milan.

He is the author of several papers published in international scientific journals, with the Hirsch Index 19. He also participates as the reviewer in the activities of international scientific journals.
