Biography
Dr. Marco Antonio Zappa, President of the Italian Society of Obesity Surgery, is a General and Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Casa di Cura La Madonnina.
After earning his degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1985, he specialized in Digestive Apparatus Surgery and Digestive Endoscopy in 1990 and General Surgery in 1995, both at the same institution.
In 1990, he became a Medical-Surgical Assistant at the Institute of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology at Policlinico di Milano. He then held the positions of Medical-Surgical Assistant with a permanent role and Deputy Chief.
Since January 1998, he has been the Head of the Severe Obesity Surgery Center at Policlinico di Milano, part of the Institute of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the University of Milan. In 2005, he began his role as a Contract Professor with various teaching assignments for the Medicine and Surgery Degree Course at the University of Milan.
From 2006 to 2008, he served on the Board of Directors of the Italian Society of Obesity Surgery as a financial auditor, and from 2008 to 2010, he was a member of the Society's board of directors.
In 2010, he became a Contract Professor for the Specialty School in General Surgery at the University of Milan, and from 2011 to 2018, he was the Director of the General Surgery Unit at the “Sacra Famiglia” Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Erba.
From 2012 to 2016, he was also the Vice President of the Italian Society of Obesity Surgery, and from 2013 to 2017, he served as President of the Brianza Medical Association. In 2013, he completed the Managerial Training Course for Complex Structure Director in the Lombardy Region with high merit, which was renewed in 2020.
Since 2016, he has been the President of the Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Specialization School and the following year achieved National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor. Since 2018, he has been the Director of the General Surgery Unit at ASST Fatebenefratelli-Sacco in Milan and, since 2021, the National President of the Italian Society of Obesity Surgery.
Dr. Zappa's research focuses primarily on bariatric and oncological fields, with over 370 scientific papers published in high-impact national and international journals. He has authored numerous surgical videos presented at major conferences and chapters in surgical textbooks, and is a co-author of scientific books and national guidelines on Obesity Surgery. He participates as a President, moderator, and/or speaker at major surgical congresses.
He is currently a member of the parliamentary intergroup on obesity and diabetes.
