Biography

Professor Lorenzo Piemonti is an endocrinologist and diabetologist of the Department of General Diabetes Medicine and Treatment of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases of the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele under the supervision of Professor Emanuele Bosi.

At the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, the professor is also the Director of the Diabetes Research Institute and the head of the Human Island Transplantation program. However, in the academic field, he is an associate professor of endocrinology at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan and a visiting professor at the Free University of Brussels.

After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan in 1994, he received a specialization in endocrinology and diseases associated with metabolic disorders in 2000, and in 2004 – in microsurgery and experimental surgery at the same university.

Professor Piemonti's clinical activities cover clinical endocrinology (thyroid gland, obesity, etc.), pays special attention to diabetes in all its clinical forms, tissue transplantation and regenerative medicine.

From the point of view of research, the professor focuses mainly on diabetes and pancreatology, in particular, on the human islet transplantation model and the biology of pancreatic cancer. In addition, beta cell replacement, immune tolerance induction strategies, dendritic cell and stem cell biology are also of interest to Professor Piemonti's research.

He is the author of more than 250 original scientific articles published in international journals. His Hirsch index is 61. He constantly participates as a speaker and moderator at national and international industry conferences.
