Giulio Leopardi

Dr. Giulio Leopardi is a senior consultant in the Ophthalmology Unit at Policlinico San Pietro and Head of the Refractive Surgery Center at Smart Clinic.

Dr. Leopardi, utilizing the modern equipment available at the unit, has developed techniques for implanting “premium” artificial lenses during cataract surgery to correct presbyopia and astigmatism.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1979 from the University of Milan, where he also obtained a specialization in Ophthalmology in 1983. His training continued with frequent study trips abroad, both in Europe and the United States.

Between 1984 and 1992, he participated in international working groups for the testing of silicone intraocular lenses and multifocal intraocular lenses. From 1989 onwards, he experimented with foldable artificial lenses, which dominated the global market from 1995 onward, allowing the use of a 3 mm incision during cataract surgery with phacoemulsification. Since 2000, he has carried out clinical activities at Policlinico San Pietro in Ponte San Pietro. He also collaborates with the National Medical Commission of the Italian Alpine Club for the prevention of ocular risks in high altitudes, particularly focusing on injuries caused by ultraviolet radiation.

Since 1991, Dr. Giulio Leopardi has been using excimer lasers for the correction of refractive errors. He has extensive experience in laser treatments for glaucoma using YAG lasers and SLT. In the 1990s, he experimented with the holmium laser for glaucoma surgery, non-invasive lacrimal duct surgery, and the correction of hyperopia. He is a speaker and organizer of national and international conferences, particularly focused on the diagnosis and treatment of various anterior segment eye diseases. For some time, he has been promoting an annual conference in the Bergamo area on innovative methods in various fields of ophthalmic surgery.
