السيرة الذاتية
Dr. Giulio Leopardi is the Head of the Refractive Surgery Center at Smart Clinic.
Using the modern equipment available in the unit, Dr. Leopardi has developed techniques for implanting “premium” intraocular lenses during cataract surgery to correct presbyopia and astigmatism.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1979, where he later obtained a specialization in Ophthalmology in 1983. His training continued with frequent study trips abroad in Europe and the United States.
Between 1984 and 1992, he participated in international working groups on the testing of silicone intraocular lenses and multifocal intraocular lenses. Starting in 1989, he was involved in research with international groups on foldable intraocular lenses, which would dominate the global market from 1995 onward by allowing 3 mm incisions during cataract surgery with phacoemulsification. From 2000 to 2025, he carried out his clinical activity at Policlinico San Pietro in Ponte San Pietro.
He also collaborates with the National Medical Commission of the Italian Alpine Club, focusing on eye risk prevention in high-altitude environments, particularly UV radiation injuries.
Since 1991, Dr. Giulio Leopardi has used excimer lasers to correct refractive errors. He has extensive experience in laser treatments for glaucoma using YAG and SLT lasers. In the 1990s, he also tested the use of the holmium laser for glaucoma surgery, non-invasive lacrimal duct surgery, and hyperopia correction. He is a speaker and organizer of national and international congresses, especially on the diagnosis and treatment of anterior segment eye diseases, and has long promoted an annual congress in the Bergamo area on innovative techniques in ophthalmic surgery.
