Francesco Maisano

Professor Francesco Maisano is a Chief of Cardiac Surgery Unit and Director of the Valve Center at the San Raffaele Research Hospital.

Prof. Maisano is a cardiac surgeon with large experience in standard cardiovascular treatments and innovative technologies, as well as cross-trained in interventional cardiology, with specific focus on structural and valve interventions. He is nominated as a world expert of valve disease according to the portal Expertscape.

In his career Prof. Maisano has performed over 6,000 cardiac surgical procedures as main operator. Most of his operations have been conducted non-invasively (catheter based) or with mini-invasive technique. He has great experience in transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve repair and replacement (e.g., MitraClip, Tendyne) and in aortic valve replacement (TAVI). He has wide expertise for several innovative solutions for high risk and inoperable patients.

Prof. Maisano covers different international academic and scientific advisory roles, membership in professional associations, review and editorial boards activities. As inventor and innovator, he has filed over 30 patents, and founded multiple start-up companies in the field of cardiovascular medicine. He has received a Silver Medal for Innovation in 2018 from the European Society of Cardiology.

Prof. Maisano has collaborated with multiple industry partners to contribute to the research and development of a few surgical and interventional devices currently available for clinical use. He has published over 550 experimental and clinical articles on valve surgery and transcatheter interventions.
