Alessandro Larcher

Biography

Dr. Alessandro Larcher is a urologist in the Department of Urology of the Clinical Research Institute Ospedale San Raffaele, headed by Professor Francesco Montorsi.

He received a diploma in Medicine and Surgery from the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan in 2011. In 2014, he completed a scientific internship in the field of oncological urology in the Department of cancer diagnostics and analysis of medical examination results at the Hospital Center at the University of Montreal in Canada. In 2017, he specialized in urology and then became the Scientific Director of the ORSI Academy robot-assisted surgery training center in Melle, Belgium. In 2018, he completed his clinical and surgical practice in the field of robot-assisted surgery in the Department of Urology at the Onze Lieve Vrouw Ziekenhuis Hospital in Aalst, Belgium. Since 2019, he has been the Chairman of the Young Academic Urologist Working Group on Robot-assisted surgery of the European Society of Urology.

With regard to clinical activities, Dr. Larcher conducts examinations as a specialist and performs surgical interventions for major diseases of the male genitourinary system. He provides assistance to patients with tumors of the kidneys, prostate, bladder, ureter, testicles or penis. He also deals with the treatment of prostate hypertrophy, urolithiasis, urethral stenosis, pyeloureteral segment stenosis, varicocele, hydrocele, phimosis or infections of the urogenital tract.

During his internship in the Department of Urology of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Ziekenhuis Hospital in Aalst, Belgium, he studied in depth the use of robot-assisted surgery in the main types of major urological interventions such as radical and partial nephrectomy, radical prostatectomy, pelvic and retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy, radical cyst nephroureterectomy, pyeloplasty and ureteral reimplantation. Also, as the first surgeon and first assistant, he participated in live surgery or broadcast surgical online events.

As for research activities, Dr. Larcher has been conducting clinical and translational research at URI - Institute of Urological Research since 2010, focusing on kidney tumors with a detailed study of the diagnosis of the disease and its treatment using robotic-assisted surgery, reducing complications associated with surgical intervention, treatments that are alternatives to surgery, such as ablation or active surveillance, and surgical treatment in cases of metastases.

He is the author and co-author of over 170 original scientific articles published in leading international journals, including the Lancet and European Urology, the most prestigious journal in the field of urology. His Hirsch index is 26. He is a member of the Italian, European and American societies of urology and regularly participates as a speaker and moderator in national and international industry congresses. Since 2019, he has been an Assistant Editor at European Urology magazine. He has conducted research describing the first training program on robot-assisted renal tumor surgery, awarded by the Milan College of Physicians with La Fucina del Futuro Award in 2019 and by the Italian Society of Urology with Hans Marberger Award in 2020.
