Alessandro Castiglioni

Biography

Professor Alessandro Castiglioni is part of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Ospedale San Raffaele Clinical Research Institute in Milan and also a visiting professor at the School of Specialization in Cardiac Surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.

In 1993, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan, where he specialized in thoracic surgery five years later. In 2001, he also completed a specialization in cardiac surgery at the University of Milan Bicocca.

Over the years of his career, he has performed more than 6,000 cardiac surgeries, focusing on plastic surgery and replacement of mitral, aortic and tricuspid valves using traditional and minimally invasive methods, in combination with ablative treatment of atrial fibrillation; interventions for myocardial revascularization with and without extracorporeal circulation; treatment of dissecting and chronic aneurysms of the ascending aorta and aortic arch using an innovative hybrid method that combines cardiac surgery and vascular surgery.

He has extensive experience in the following areas: replacement of aortic and mitral valves through transapical access in patients undergoing cardiac surgery; tricuspid valve repair in people with primary tricuspid insufficiency; plastic surgery or replacement of a tricuspid valve on a beating heart in patients with tricuspid valve pathology.

Professor Castiglioni has become the principal investigator in numerous studies in Italy and abroad, contributing to the development of the mini-extracorporeal circulation method for aortic valve replacement. In addition, he is the creator of the patented system for transapical and transfemoral implantation of a prosthesis in the mitral position.

As a speaker, he has participated in over 100 events and continuing education courses in cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology, and is also the author of over 70 articles published in national and international journals such as the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Perfusion, Italian Heart Journal, Journal of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery, Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Metabolism, Journal of Heart Valve Disease, Interactive Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, European Heart Journal of Cardiovascular Imaging, JACC Cardiovascular Interventions, Cardiovascular Revascularization Medicine.
