Corneal Collagen Cross-linking
What is it?
Corneal collagen cross-linking is a surgical procedure that increases corneal rigidity and is mainly utilized to block the progression of keratoconus.
When is this procedure indicated?
Corneal collagen cross-linking is indicated in patients with documented progression of keratoconus and ectasia secondary to refractive surgery procedures.
How is it performed?
The procedure is performed in the operating theater. After removal of the corneal epithelium, a riboflavin solution is instilled on the corneal stroma and UV light is utilized to promote a photochemical reaction that determines the formation of covalent bonds between collagen fibrils, increasing the tensile strength of the cornea.
