Department of Lymphatic Surgery @ Casa di cura La Madonnina

Lymphedema, as you know for sure, describes a progressive pathologic condition of the lymphatic system in which there is interstitial accumulation of protein-rich fluid and subsequent inflammation, adipose tissue hypertrophy, and fibrosis. The swelling and subsequent induration of the affected region can cause disfigurement, as well as decreased mobility and function.
Traditionally Lymphedema has been described as refractory or incurable. Patients must endure compression and decongestive massage in perpetuity, dealing with recurrent infections.
Recent years have brought new advances in the study of lymphedema pathophysiology, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic tools that are changing this perspective.
Vascularized lymph node transfer has emerged as a potentially curative procedure supporting Lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) and ablative procedures with remarkable results.
Our multidisciplinary approach delivers targeted and tailored treatment on every patient to offer the most effective lyphedema care.
