Recurrent polychondritis
What is it?
Recurrent polychondritis is a rare inflammatory disease of unknown etiology with a course, characterized by exacerbations and remissions, but generally progressive, which mainly affects the cartilage of the ears, nose and tracheobronchial trunk. There are no hereditary diseases. 30% of patients also suffer from other autoimmune rheumatological diseases: systemic vasculitis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren's syndrome.
Which are the symptoms?
There are diagnostic criteria that help in the diagnosis: bilateral auricular recurrent chondritis, chondritis of the cartilage of the nose, inflammation of ocular structures, chondritis of the larynx or trachea, cochlear or vestibular damage (hypocusis, tinnitus or dizziness). Fever, weight loss, arthralgia can be associated.

How is it treated?
Initial therapy is based on the use of steroids, initially at a high dose, which is gradually reduced. In case of relapse or poor response, immunosuppressants are prescribed. Surgery is sometimes required if heart valves are damaged or a stent is placed at the tracheal level.
