Hyperhidrosis

What is it?

This is excessive sweating of the hands associated with increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system.

The most common form of palmar hyperhidrosis is idiopathic, in which specific causes are not recognized. The disorder begins in childhood or adolescence; it causes embarrassment, anxiety, nervousness and can significantly affect the social and professional life of sick people.

How is it treated?

Among the various forms of treatment (antiperspirants, iontophoresis, botulinum toxin), surgical interruption of the thoracic sympathetic region responsible for excessive sweating is a therapeutic procedure that offers a definitive cure for this disorder. Today, the operation is performed using videothoracoscopy, therefore with minimal invasiveness: in fact, it is performed through two very small skin incisions in the armpit, which gives excellent aesthetic results. The procedure requires about 48 hours of hospitalization and has an immediate effect with complete disappearance of the disorder in 99% of cases. Compensating sweating may occur after surgery (in about 50% of cases) in other parts of the body (usually in the trunk and legs); it is a phenomenon that usually occurs mildly and only during exercise
