Benign lung tumors

What is it?

These are pulmonary nodules consisting of normal elements of the lung joined together in an abnormal manner. They do not spread over long distances. There are several types: hamartoma, hemangiopericytoma, sclerosing hemangioma, granular cell tumor, pseudolymphoma, fibroma, lipoma, lung leiomyoma, benign sugar tumor, teratoma.

Causes and risk factors

Men are susceptible to this disease in a slightly higher percentage (approximately 2-3: 1).

Which are the symptoms?

They are asymptomatic and are usually an incidental finding on chest x-rays. They may appear as single or multiple nodules and grow slowly. The radiologic appearance may also look like a thickening.

How is it diagnosed?

Radiologic examinations can help make a presumptive diagnosis of benignity: this also applies to invasive diagnostic procedures such as CT-guided needle aspiration, although CT-guided cytologic examination is not always conclusive for making a diagnosis. Fibrobronchoscopy may be useful for central and large lesions.

How is it treated?

If the diagnosis remains unclear, surgical removal of the lesion may be indicated.
