Biography

Professor Claudio Doglioni is the Head of the Department of Pathological Anatomy at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan, as well as the Ordinary Professor in Pathological Anatomy at the University of Vita-Salute San Raffaele.

After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Ferrara, he specialized in pathological anatomy and laboratory techniques at the University of Parma. In 1986, he completed his second specialization in oncology at the University of Ferrara. He was a visiting fellow in the Pathology Department of University College London in 1991 and the Pathology Department of the University of Washington, Seattle in 1999.

In his diagnostic and research work, the Professor Doglioni specializes, in particular, in diseases of the pancreas, lungs and breasts, treating more than 4,000 patients every year. In addition, he has extensive experience in the immunohistochemical field. He became the first expert to find out how calretinin is a marker of mesothelioma, CDX2 protein is a marker of colon tumor, and p63 is a marker of myoepithelial cells in breast pathologies. His laboratory includes an immunohistochemistry section and a molecular diagnostics section. His special contribution to medicine was the demonstration of the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection in the treatment of gastric lymphomas of the MALT type.

The main interest for him is the determination of diagnostic and prognostic molecular markers in oncology, identification of molecular changes in genes involved in the development of tumors, the study of the pathogenic role of infectious agents in MALT lymphoma (lymphoid tissue of the mucous membranes) and the use of various immunohistochemical methods.

He is the author of 420 articles (Impact Factor is 1.802,578, Hirsch index in Scopus database is 75) published in international journals such as The American Journal of Pathology, Genes & Development, Laboratory Investigation, Anticancer Research, Blood, Annals of Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research and Lancet. He is the member of the Editorial Board of the Advanced in Anatomic Patholofy and Pathologica journal, the member of the International Academy of Pathology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Italian Society of Pathological Anatomy, and also the co-founder of the Italian Group for Immunohistochemistry (GYM).
