Biography
Dr. Viviana Cacioppo is an ophthalmologist at the Ophthalmology Unit of IRCCS Policlinico San Donato.
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Palermo in 2004, she specialized in Ophthalmology at the University of Milan in 2009.
From 2010 to 2023, she worked at the Sacco, Fatebenefratelli, and Oftalmico Hospital Group, where she held the position of Acting Director of the Complex Ophthalmology Unit at the Fatebenefratelli Ophthalmic Hospital in 2022–2023.
Since September 2023, Dr. Cacioppo has been practicing as an independent vitreoretinal surgeon in the Ophthalmology Department of Policlinico San Donato.
She has performed over 7,500 complex ocular surgeries, including:
- Retinal detachment surgery (ab interno and ab externo)
- Macular surgery
- Ocular trauma surgery
- Oculoplastic surgery
- Traditional and femtosecond-assisted phacoemulsification (femtocataract surgery)
- Intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents
Dr. Cacioppo has been continuously engaged in clinical and scientific research, resulting in studies and publications in leading Italian and international ophthalmology journals. Her work has focused on topics such as:
- Malformative glaucoma
- Early diagnosis and use of new osmoprotective tear substitutes in glaucoma patients with dry eye
- Episcleral surgery
- Development of macular pathologies
She has also conducted studies on ocular disorders associated with multiple myeloma, in collaboration with the Milan Cancer Institute, which led to further scientific publications.
Currently, she continues to develop research projects on new episcleral surgery techniques, the use and toxicity of intraretinal tamponades, vitreomacular traction and photoreceptor alterations, and the use of corticosteroids in macular surgery.
She actively participates in national and international ophthalmology congresses.
