Biography

Professor Vito Annese is the Director of the Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato and an Associate Professor of Gastroenterology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.

His educational journey began with his graduation with honors in Medicine and Surgery in 1981 from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, where he later specialized in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in 1985 and 1990, respectively. He earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Gastroenterology and Pathophysiology from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium in 1989. He led the Complex Endoscopy Unit at IRCCS CSS in San Giovanni Rotondo from 2006 to 2009, the Complex Gastroenterology Unit at Careggi Hospital in Florence from 2009 to 2016, and worked in Dubai from 2016 to 2023 as the head of Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine, Medical Direction, and Academic Affairs.

Clinically, Professor Annese focuses on chronic inflammatory and functional bowel diseases. He is also an expert in digestive endoscopy and general gastroenterology.

His research activities concentrate on the genetic components in the predisposition and natural history of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, as well as the study of new experimental drugs for these diseases and the development of international guidelines.

He is a member of several scientific societies, including:

  • European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO)
  • Italian Society of Gastroenterology (SIGE)
  • Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED)
  • Emirates Gastroenterology and Hepatology Society (EGHS)

He is the author and co-author of over 300 publications in scientific journals and book chapters, with an H-index of 86 (Scopus). He frequently participates in national and international conferences in the field.
