Dr. Serena Nannipieri is an allergologist at the Advanced Multidisciplinary Center for Asthma, Food and Drug Allergies at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, directed by Dr. Mona-Rita Yacoub.

She graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pisa with top marks and specialized with honors in Allergology at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, with a thesis on eosinophilic esophagitis and food allergy. She is the author and co-author of articles in indexed journals on drug allergy, chronic spontaneous urticaria, asthma, and food allergy, and she serves as a sub-investigator in numerous national and international clinical studies and registries.

Clinical expertise:

  • Drug allergy: diagnostic, tolerance, and desensitization tests for antibiotics, beta-lactams, contrast media, anesthetics, NSAIDs, chemotherapeutic agents (in the hospital’s Cancer Center), and biologics; patch testing for delayed hypersensitivity (including exfoliative dermatitis).
  • Food allergies: management of patients with postprandial gastrointestinal symptoms and differential diagnosis from food allergy (such as lactose or histamine intolerance, or irritable bowel syndrome, with possible dietary guidance), and management of patients with severe food allergies through first-, second-, and third-level tests (specific IgE; basophil activation test; in vivo tests such as prick-by-prick with fresh foods; oral food tolerance and challenge tests) and food desensitization.
  • Asthma (including severe asthma) and rhino-conjunctivitis: performs diagnostic tests such as skin prick tests, specific IgE, and spirometry; follows patients undergoing allergen immunotherapy; part of the severe asthma outpatient clinic and member of the Italian Severe Asthma Network (SANI).
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis: hospital allergology lead at San Raffaele, in collaboration with gastroenterologists and the patient association ESEO Italia.
  • Chronic spontaneous urticaria and angioedema: manages with diagnostic tests (autologous serum test, punch biopsy) and first-/second-line treatments including biologic therapies.
  • Eosinophilic and mast cell diseases: managed through a multidisciplinary approach with hematologists, immunologists, and other specialists.
  • Atopic dermatitis: diagnosis (punch biopsy) and management with first- and second-line therapies, including biologics and immunosuppressants.

She is a member of SIAAIC, SIMI, and a junior member of EAACI, and regularly participates as a speaker at national and international congresses.
