Biography

Dr. Salvatore Mazzeo is a neurologist in the Complex Neurology Unit at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato and a senior neurology researcher at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan.  

He earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery from Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan in 2015 and specialized in Neurology at the University of Florence in 2020. In 2024, he obtained a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Florence.  

During his PhD, he completed a research fellowship at the Dementia Research Centre of University College London (UCL), where he conducted a project on acquired language disorders of degenerative origin.  

He also worked as a rehabilitation neurologist and researcher at the Intensive Neurorehabilitation Unit of IRCCS Don Gnocchi in Florence, gaining expertise in managing patients with severe acquired brain injuries and leading a study on the role of depression in patients with brain damage caused by ischemic stroke.  

At IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, Dr. Mazzeo focuses on diagnosing and treating patients with acute and chronic neurological conditions, with a particular interest in cognitive decline and other neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system.  

His research is centered on studying the clinical, cognitive, genetic, and biological features of early and atypical manifestations of dementia, also utilizing artificial intelligence techniques. His work has provided significant insights into understanding the early stages of cognitive decline and managing patients with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). He has also contributed to characterizing the presentation and progression of primary progressive aphasias (PPA) through cross-linguistic studies.  

He is the Principal Investigator of the SIGN-AL study ("Unraveling the SIGNature of ALzheimer's disease: integrating multimodal biomarkers through machine learning"), a multicenter study supported by the international "Robert Katzman" grant, focused on cognitive decline biomarkers.  

Dr. Mazzeo has authored or co-authored over 50 scientific articles published in high-impact international journals. His Scopus H-index is 13.  

In 2024, he received the Robert Katzman International Award from the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Brain Foundation.  

He serves as a reviewer for multiple high-impact journals, including *Neurology, Scientific Reports (Nature), Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, Journal of Neurology, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry*, among others.  

Dr. Mazzeo is an alumnus member of the International Brain Behavior Group at University College London and participates in numerous international multicenter projects focused on acquired language disorders.  

He regularly speaks and moderates at national and international neurology conferences and is a Fellow of scientific societies such as the Italian Society of Neurology (SIN), the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), the American Academy of Neurology, and the Alzheimer’s Association.
