Biography

Dr. Pedro Luis Berjano is the Head of the GSpine4 Department of the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi Clinical Research Institute in Milan.

In 1988, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Granada in Spain, and then completed a specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Hospital Monografico di Traumatologia, Ortopedia y Rehabilitacion Asepeyo in Madrid. In 2003 he received his doctorate from the University of Salamanca. His higher education and specialization degrees were recognized in Italy and the Swiss Confederation between 2003 and 2008.

His career as a medical specialist began at Hospital Monografico di Traumatologia, Ortopedia y Rehabilitacion Asepeyo in Madrid in 1997. He subsequently took the position of the Head of the Department of Spine Surgery at the same hospital. In parallel, he becomes the Deputy Head of the Orthopedics Specialization Program and Clinical Research Coordinator. In 2003, he moved to Italy, starting to practice spinal surgery at the Istituti Clinici Zucchi in Monza. In 2009, he became the Head of the Department of Spine Surgery at the Clinica Santa Chiara in Locarno (Switzerland) and began his research activities at the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi Clinical Research Institute. In 2013, he took the position of the Head of the department at the same institute.

His areas of expertise are minimally invasive spinal column surgery and its application in the treatment of scoliosis, spinal deformity surgery in adults and anterior approach spine surgery. According to his colleagues, he is one of the leading experts in minimally invasive lateral access surgery, revision surgery and spinal deformity surgery in adults.

Over the years, Dr. Pedro Berjano has taught frequently in Europe and the United States. He is a member of numerous international and Italian scientific societies, including the Italian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Spine Society of Europe and North American Spine Society. He is currently the lecturer at the Japanese Orthopedic Association, Director of Fellowship and Spine Centers in AOSpine Europe and Southern Africa, Chairman of the Society of Lateral Access Surgery (SOLAS) and Associate Editor of the European Spine Journal.

Dr. Berjano is a speaker and chairman of many national and international congresses, and he is the author and co-author of over 150 scientific articles in influential journals. His articles have over 1200 citations.
