Paola Cinque
Biography
Dr. Paola Cinque is an infectious disease specialist at the Infectious Diseases Unit of the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele Turro, led by Professor Antonella Castagna.
After earning her degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1987 (with honors) and specializing in Infectious Diseases in 1991 (with top marks), she began her clinical career at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the L. Sacco Hospital in Milan. She then spent three years at the Department of Virology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, where she studied molecular diagnostic methods for nervous system infections and obtained her PhD in Virology in 1995. In 1994, she joined the Infectious Diseases Division to pursue clinical and research activities.
Dr. Cinque was an Adjunct Professor at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (UniSR) from 1999 to 2021, teaching Infectious Diseases courses in both Italian and English (IMDP) and coordinating the latter from 2014 to 2021.
Her clinical focus includes HIV infection and its complications, nervous system infections (such as encephalitis and meningitis), progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), opportunistic infections in immunocompromised individuals, herpesvirus infections (including genital herpes and other recurrent forms), sexually transmitted infections, and COVID-19 and its complications.
Dr. Cinque has an extensive background in clinical research, particularly in the fields of nervous system infections, PML, opportunistic infections, and HIV infection. She has received multiple grants from national and international organizations for her work, contributing to the identification of biomarkers for diagnosis and clinical monitoring, as well as understanding disease mechanisms to develop and test new pharmacological approaches. In recent years, she has also initiated research projects exploring the role of physical activity in health and inflammation control. She actively collaborates with various clinical and research institutions, both nationally and internationally, and is involved in drafting guidelines for the management and treatment of HIV infection and opportunistic infections. Dr. Cinque has authored approximately 230 scientific publications in international journals and has an H-index of 56.
