Biography

Since 2018 Dr Maurizio Tespili is the Head of the Cardiology Department of the IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio in Milan. He graduated in medicine and surgery at the University of Pavia (1985) and five years later specialized in cardiology at the same university.

Dr Maurizio Tespili is involved in the development of clinical and rehabilitation protocols, with a particular focus on the treatment of heart failure, acute myocardial infarction and heart valve pathologies. At the Laboratory of Haemodynamics, which he directs and which is recognized as a national reference center, he performs more than 1000 coronary angioplasties, more than 130 percutaneous aortic valve replacements (PAVL) and 15 mitral valve surgeries each year. Dr Tespili is a leading expert in intracoronary imaging techniques, including coronary angioscopy, intracoronary ultrasound and coronary blood flow guides.

He also made a great contribution to the application of new surgical techniques and devices. He was the first in Italy to implant a new left ventricular assist device (2003), developed an experimental programme for the treatment of aortic valve pathologies approved in Lombardy (since 2010); in 2014 he received approval to implant the first fully intracavitary pacemaker in Italy (Nanostim), and was the first in the country to use, outside clinical trials, the Endoventricular Partitioning device (2014) and the Reducer device (2015).

He has also performed implantation of the Carillon percutaneous mitral annuloplasty system and the Cardioband percutaneous mitral annuloplasty system in 2016-2017. He is also actively involved in research activities, as evidenced by his participation as principal investigator or co-investigator in many national and international studies, which he reports on through his numerous scientific articles.
