Biography
Professor Luciano Merlini is a neurologist at Villa Erbosa.
He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Bologna in 1968. He specialized in Nervous and Mental Diseases at the same university in 1972, and in Orthopedic Physiotherapy in 1975.
Currently, Professor Merlini practices at the neurology clinic at Villa Erbosa, where he focuses on:
- Neuromuscular diseases
- Myology
- Neurophysiopathology
- Neurology
- Neuropsychiatry
His areas of interest include the nervous system in general, fibromyalgia, diseases of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves, and hereditary neurological and muscular diseases.
He has been actively involved in research on hereditary neuromuscular pathology and diseases of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. He has authored 330 scientific papers, 11 book chapters, and 3 books, with an H-index of 67.
He is also an Associate Editor of the journal "Neuromuscular Disorders" and a member of the Editorial Board of "Skeletal Muscle."
From 1995 to 2001, he served as Secretary of the "World Muscle Society" (WMS) - the global society for neuromuscular diseases.
Since 2000, he has received Telethon funding for research on collagen VI deficiency myopathies, leading to the identification of pathogenic mechanisms of these myopathies.
From 2000 to 2003, he was the scientific coordinator of the EU-funded project "Myocluster," which aimed to advance knowledge on the clinical, pathological, biochemical, and genetic aspects of congenital muscular dystrophies, Emery-Dreifuss dystrophy, and Bethlem and Ullrich myopathy.
He has coordinated more than 10 international workshops organized by the European NeuroMuscular Centre (ENMC) based in the Netherlands.
He was the Principal Investigator and coordinator of the Telethon - Italian SMART (Spinal Muscular Atrophy Randomized Clinical Trial) project, which involved seven Italian centers.
