Ioannis Kartalas Goumas

Dr. Ioannis Kartalas Goumas is a urologist and the Head of the Urology Department at Istituto Clinico Beato Matteo.

He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1995 and completed his specialization in Urology at the same institution in 2000. That year, he also completed a formative stage in Endourology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York.

Dr. Goumas has pursued further training in Communication and Relationship in Medicine and Clinical Psychology through the Italian Society of Urology project.

From 2000 to 2006, he worked as a medical officer at the Urological Clinic II at the University of Milan, Ospedale San Giuseppe. Between 2002 and 2003, he served as a tutor and evaluator for the State Examination in Medicine. He then worked at Ospedale Sacco in Milan from 2006 to 2008, followed by a position at Urological Clinic III at the University of Milan, Ospedale San Paolo, where he was also a Contract Professor.

From 2010 to 2018, Dr. Goumas held the role of medical officer, with duties as first assistant and deputy director in the Urology Department at Ospedale di Vimercate. He was also responsible for the Endourology Unit and Director of the Urology Department at the same hospital from 2016 to 2019.

Dr. Goumas has performed over 4,000 surgeries as the primary operator, specializing in complex oncological, laparoscopic, and endourological procedures for kidney stones and benign prostatic hyperplasia. He is also experienced in managing complex ureteral strictures through ureteral bypass, endoprostheses, and laser surgery.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Goumas has gained extensive experience in management and organization within urology departments, including budget management and cost-effectiveness analysis of new technologies.
