Biography

Professor Cristiano Crosta is a General Surgeon specializing in digestive endoscopy at Casa di Cura La Madonnina.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1975 and went on to specialize in General Surgery (1980) and Legal Medicine and Insurance (1983). In 1983, he became qualified for the position of Chief Hospital Surgeon in General Surgery and obtained a managerial training diploma for complex hospital structure executives from the School of Health Management (SDS) in Lombardy in 2006.

In terms of clinical activity, he served as a surgeon and endoscopist at the Policlinico Universitario di Milano until 1994, after which he became the Director of the Endoscopy Division at the European Institute of Oncology, a position he held until 2019. He then became a Senior Consultant for the same division until 2024.

Academically, Professor Crosta has been a Contract Professor for several prestigious specialization schools at the University of Milan, including:

  • Digestive Surgery and Digestive Endoscopy (1982-1993)
  • Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy (2001-2009)
  • General Surgery at the University of Milan (2009-2013)

He is a member of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED). He has also served as a member of the Lombardy Regional Board for SIED for two consecutive terms (1992-2000), during which he held the position of Vice President (1996-2000) and was later elected President (2000-2004).

In 2009, he served as President of the National Congress of the Italian Federation of Digestive Diseases.

Throughout his career, Professor Crosta has been a member of several important committees, including:

  • The Board of GISCOR (Italian Group for Colorectal Cancer Screening) (2010-2012)
  • The Italian Board of the International Live Endoscopy Course in Milan (2010-2012)
  • The Italian Scientific Committee for the SCO.RE study on sigmoidoscopy as a potential screening method for colorectal cancer and SCO.RE II, comparing various colorectal cancer prevention strategies
  • The Lombard Operational Group for Colon Cancer Prevention
  • The Technical-Scientific Committee for the Health Department of the Lombardy Region to develop guidelines for colorectal cancer screening
  • The Scientific Committee for colorectal cancer screening at ASL Milan
  • The Oncological Commission of SIED (1999-2000)
  • The National Ethics and Medical-Legal Commission of SIED (2000-2001)
  • The Scientific Commission of SIED (2004-2008)
  • The Editorial Board of the Italian Journal of Digestive Endoscopy of SIED

He has also served as the coordinator of the Clinical Trials Commission of SIED, which was established to promote and evaluate clinical studies in gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy.

Professor Crosta reviews for various journals in endoscopy, gastroenterology, and surgical endoscopy, mainly for *Gastrointestinal Endoscopy* and *Digestive and Liver Disease*.

His primary clinical activities include the prevention and surveillance of colorectal cancer, as well as the endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Barrett's esophagus and adenocarcinoma on Barrett's esophagus
  • Early neoplasms of the stomach, esophagus, and colorectal area
  • Gastrointestinal lymphomas
  • Colorectal adenomas and cancerous adenomas
  • Endoscopic drainage of the biliary tract for obstructive jaundice (pancreatic, biliary, and metastatic tumors)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound for staging and diagnosing neoplasms of the digestive tract and pancreas

Throughout his career, Professor Crosta has actively participated in congresses organized by SIED and the Federation of Digestive Diseases, contributing communications, presentations, and moderations, and serving on scientific and organizational committees. He has authored over 75 publications indexed in MEDLINE, appearing in journals such as Endoscopy, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Digestive and Liver Disease, Gastroenterology, Journal of National Cancer Institute, and Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, among others.
