Biography

Professor Sergio Barbieri is a specialist in neurology and works at Casa di Cura La Madonnina.

After earning his degree in Medicine with honors from the University of Milan in 1979, in 1982-83, he worked as a Research Fellow at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was later recognized as a Mayo Alumnus. In 1983, he specialized in Neurology at the University of Milan, where in 1989, he completed his PhD in Neurological Sciences.

Throughout his professional career, Prof. Barbieri led the Department of Neurosciences and Mental Health at the IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico Foundation in Milan for many years, where he also established and directed the Reference Center for Neurostimulation, Neurotechnologies, and Movement Disorders. He also served as a Professor for the Master's program in Neurophysiopathology and as a Contract Professor at the School of Specialization in Neurology at the University of Milan. In 2018, he co-founded a spin-off company from the University of Milan and the Ca' Granda Foundation in Milan, focused on innovative technologies for neuroscience.

Over the years, his areas of interest have been diverse, ranging from clinical neurophysiology (electromyography) to neuromuscular diseases, Parkinson’s disease, dystonias, movement disorders, and epileptology. Since 1989, Professor Barbieri has used botulinum toxin to treat dystonias, spasticity, progressive hemifacial spasm, and hyperhidrosis.

Since 1998, he has conducted scientific research funded by numerous national and international projects (MIUR, PRIN, ERANET, FISM, FESR, FRRB, Ministry of Health). These research efforts have resulted in 150 publications in journals indexed by JCR (Journal Citation Report) and IM (Index Medicus), where he serves on the international board and as a referee. He is also the author of chapters in 5 books, with 9,620 citations, an H-index of 53, and an i10 index of 104.
