Alfio Spina

Biography

Dr. Alfio Spina is a neurosurgeon in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Ospedale San Raffaele Clinical Research Institute, headed by Professor Pietro Mortini.

After graduating with honors in 2009 from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Catania, he he specialized in neurosurgery at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan in 2016. In terms of overseas experience, Dr. Spina was a visiting specialist in the Department of Neurosurgery and the Harvey H. Ammerman Microsurgery Laboratory at George Washington University, Washington DC, USA, with the aim of studying microsurgical anomaly and developing new surgical techniquesю. In addition, he completed an internship in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Regional Hospital of Lugano, Switzerland.

From a clinical point of view, the doctor focuses mainly on:

  • oncological diseases (meningiomas, gliomas, metastases, neuromas, rare tumors),
  • vascular diseases (cavernous angiomas, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations), both in the brain and in the spinal cord,
  • hydrocephalus,
  • degenerative diseases of the spinal column using classical or minimally invasive techniques,
  • stereotaxy,
  • radiosurgery,
  • craniofacial pain using a multidisciplinary approach.

His clinical research activities focus on neurosurgical cancers, trigeminal neuralgia and the study of new surgical techniques. These studies are also being carried out in collaboration with overseas centers such as George Washington University, Washington DC, USA, and the Department of Neurosurgery of the General University Hospital in Alicante, Spain.

He regularly takes part in continuing education courses in the field of neurosurgery, and in national and international congresses as a speaker. He has taught various courses in neurosurgery in Italy, Europe and the USA. He is a member of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), Leksell Society and SNO, Society for Neurological Sciences. In 2021, he received the national scientific qualification of a Level II Professor. Dr. Spina won an EANS research grant in 2021.
