Biography

Dr. Sandro Passaretti is Head of the Functional Department of Digestive Pathophysiology in the Operational Department of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy of the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele under the supervision of Professor Pier Alberto Testoni and collaborates with the Casa di Cura La Madonnina in Milan.

He is also an Associate Professor at the Vita Salute San Raffaele University.

In 1980, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan, and then at the same institute in 1984 he specialized in gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy, and in 1988 – in pharmacology in medicine.

Over the years, he interned abroad at the Academisch Ziekenhuis of the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), at Creighton University in Omaha (USA) and at the University of Sheffield (UK). From 1988 to 2001 he was "instructor and co-director" of postgraduate courses in esophageal pathology organized at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles (California, USA). 

As for clinical activity, Dr. Passaretti deals with gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, eosinophilic esophagitis, dyspepsia, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome, and from a research point of view – all related aspects of the pathophysiology of digestion.

According to the diagnostic studies carried out by the doctor at Casa di Cura La Madonnina, the following are noted: high-resolution esophagomanometry, daily pH-metry of the esophagus, daily impedancemetry of the esophagus, breath test (for lactose intolerance, glucose in the small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and Helicobacter pylori).
In the Ospedale San Raffaele, in addition to the above, the doctor performs: conventional and anorectal esophagomanometry, breath test with octanoic acid to measure gastric emptying time, with fructose to diagnose fructose malabsorption, with lactulose to measure orocecal transit and the possible presence of bacterial overgrowth and biological feedback connections – restoration of the pelvic floor.

He is the author and co-author of more than 120 indexed articles published in national and international journals, 3 books on digestive pathologies and their diagnosis, and 2 books on the use of the Internet in medical sciences. His Hirsch Index is 18.

He is constantly invited as a speaker to courses, conferences, and congresses of the industry of national and international importance.
