Claudio Savaresi

Dr. Claudio Savaresi is the head of the Ophthalmology Unit at Policlinico San Marco, part of the San Donato Group in Bergamo. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan, where he later specialized in Ophthalmology II.

A pioneer in cataract surgery, Dr. Savaresi has focused on resolving refractive errors after cataract surgery, which involves replacing the natural lens with an artificial one, as well as performing refractive surgery with or without laser technology. His ongoing research in advanced technologies has enabled him to perform highly sophisticated procedures, such as the implantation of custom-made artificial lenses through microscopic incisions and employing special strategies during glaucoma surgery to minimize postoperative side effects. 

For many years, he has exclusively used minimally invasive techniques in vitreoretinal surgery. He also employs the most innovative methods for corneal diseases, including corneal transplants performed with Femtolaser technology and the use of corneal rings combined with riboflavin and laser treatment in keratoconus surgery.

Dr. Savaresi collaborates with international companies to enhance surgical techniques and tools, having invented numerous instruments dedicated to ocular microsurgery. Recently, he has focused on a new surgical project aimed at reducing visual deficits in patients suffering from age-related macular degeneration and degenerative myopia, achieving good postoperative results.

He has worked with ophthalmologists from Spain, Israel, and Mexico to promote innovative techniques through congresses and scientific and surgical training courses. Together, they address complex cataract surgery cases in patients with macular degeneration and high myopia, which often require a combined surgical approach with the implantation of a miniaturized magnification system.

Throughout his career, Dr. Savaresi has performed tens of thousands of ocular microsurgery procedures, some of which have been broadcast live during international congresses of the Italian Ophthalmological Society.
