Mattia Carozzo

Dr. Mattia Carozzo is the head of the Hand Surgery Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele. He also collaborates with Istituto Clinico Villa Aprica.

In 2011, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan, where he specialized in Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery in 2017, graduating with top marks (70/70 cum laude).

During his specialization, he trained at the Complex University Unit of Hand Surgery and Rehabilitation at the Multimedica Group in Milan, where he later became an assistant and then the deputy head responsible for Functional Surgery (Multimedica Hospital, Castellanza) and Trauma and Wrist Surgery (IRCCS Multimedica, Sesto San Giovanni).

In his specialized training, he honed his skills in reconstructive microsurgery, trauma, and minimally invasive wrist surgery at the São Paulo Hand Center in São Paulo, Brazil.

As the lead surgeon, he has performed over 6,000 surgeries of varying complexity related to Hand Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery of the upper limb, including surgical treatments for:

• Carpal tunnel syndrome
• Trigger finger
• De Quervain's disease
• Rhizarthrosis, wrist and finger arthritis
• Compression of peripheral nerves (ulnar nerve at the elbow, radial tunnel syndrome, pronator teres syndrome, and fibrous lacertus syndrome)
• Acute treatment of traumatic amputations with digital reimplantation and macro-reimplantation, including in pediatric patients
• Coverage of tissue loss with microsurgical flaps
• Complex fractures of the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand, including pediatric cases, with external and internal fixation using a minimally invasive approach
• Ligamentous injuries of the wrist and hand with open and arthroscopic reconstructions
• Microsurgical nerve and tendon reconstructions
• Paralysis and spasticity (tendon and nerve transfers, selective neurotomies)
• Algodystrophy

He has served as a University Tutor for the Specialty School of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery and as a lecturer in the Master's program in Hand Surgery and Rehabilitation at the University of Milan. He has been a Tutor for the Wrist Arthroscopy course of the International Wrist Arthroscopy Society (IWAS) at IRCAD in Strasbourg and a lecturer at wrist arthroscopy courses organized by the Italian Society of Hand Surgery at ICLO in Verona.

He is an ordinary member of the Italian Society of Hand Surgery and is the author and co-author of scientific articles in the field of Hand Surgery.
