Dr. Marco Anselmino is a Consultant in General Surgery and Head of the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan.
He earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Padua in 1985 and specialized in General Surgery at the same university in 1991. He continued his training at Creighton University in Omaha, USA, where he obtained a Fellowship in Esophageal Surgery in 1992.
Over the years, Dr. Anselmino has refined his surgical expertise, performing numerous procedures, particularly on the upper gastrointestinal tract, and dedicating much of his work to the development of minimally invasive techniques.
Since 1999, he has focused on bariatric surgery, gaining significant expertise in this field. For 12 years, he led Italy's first Comprehensive Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Unit, established at the University Hospital of Pisa, where he performed over 6,000 procedures. These included primary surgeries such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch, and SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy), as well as revision surgeries for patients experiencing long-term complications, weight regain, or recurrence of comorbidities after the initial surgery.
In the field of bariatric surgery, he has developed a strong interest in and expertise with advanced robotic surgery technologies, utilizing the Da Vinci surgical system.
Dr. Anselmino has participated in over 300 national and international congresses and has a robust scientific output, with 336 publications to date. Of these, 62 focus on bariatric and metabolic surgery, appearing in high-impact journals such as Obesity Surgery, Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases (SOARD), Diabetes, Diabetologia, Obesity, International Journal of Obesity, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Surgical Endoscopy, and Annals of Surgery.
Dr. Anselmino is a member of the Italian Society for Obesity and Metabolic Diseases Surgery (SICOB), where he served as Vice President for two terms. He is also a member of the International Federation for Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery (IFSO), the American Society for Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery (ASMBS), and the International Excellence Federation of Bariatric Surgery (IEF).
