Marco Metra

Dr. Marco Metra is the Head of the Clinical Cardiology Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele and Full Professor of Cardiology at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Parma in 1981, where he later completed a specialization in Cardiology in 1985 and in Internal Medicine in 1990.

Professional experience:

• From 1986 to 2012, he served as Senior Cardiologist and Head of a Sub-Unit within the Cardiology Department at ASST Spedali Civili di Brescia.
• From June 2, 1986, he was a University Researcher, and from November 2, 2001, to December 1, 2015, Associate Professor of Cardiology at the University of Brescia.
• From 2012 to September 2025, Director of the Complex Cardiology Unit at ASST Spedali Civili di Brescia.
• From December 1, 2015, to September 30, 2025, Full Professor of Cardiology at the University of Brescia.
• Since October 1, 2025, Full Professor of Cardiology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan.
• Since November 2025, Director of the Cardiology Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan.

In 1985, he was Visiting Research Associate at the Committee on Clinical Pharmacology of the University of Chicago, Illinois, USA (Director Prof. Leon I. Goldberg).

From January 2015 to April 2024, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Heart Failure, raising its impact factor from 6.5 to 16.9 in 2023, making it the 5th highest-ranked journal in the cardiovascular field worldwide.

Prof. Metra’s main scientific focus has been clinical research in heart failure, covering diagnostic and therapeutic aspects. He actively participated as global coordinator in over 40 worldwide clinical trials and multicenter observational studies, and he co-chaired the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Guidelines on Heart Failure in both the 2013 and 2021 editions.

His clinical work has always centered on comprehensive patient management in clinical cardiology, ensuring the appropriate application of evidence-based strategies for optimal treatment and outcomes.

He is the author of over 1,700 scientific articles indexed in PubMed, with 91,150 citations and an H-Index of 129 on Scopus. He ranks 34th among the Top Italian Scientists in biomedical sciences.
