السيرة الذاتية

Dr. Giovanni Paolino is a dermatologist at the Dermatology Unit of the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, directed by Prof. Santo Raffaele Mercuri.

After a study period in France at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, he earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Rome Tor Vergata (2010) and specialized in Dermatology and Venereology at Sapienza University of Rome, with a particular focus on the early diagnosis and treatment of melanoma and on cutaneous reactions in pediatric onco-hematology patients.

From 2010 to 2017, he worked at the Dermatopathology Unit of the San Gallicano Institute in Rome, specializing in the study of tumor, inflammatory, and drug-reaction skin lesions, and gaining solid expertise in histopathological slide interpretation. In 2020, he obtained a PhD in Dermatology from Sapienza University of Rome and, in the same year, was awarded qualification as Associate Professor in Dermatology and Venereology.

Since November 2017, he has been a consultant at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, mainly focusing on oncologic dermatology and serving as Research Coordinator for the Melanoma Disease Unit within the Comprehensive Cancer Center. At Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, he holds the academic title of Cultore della Materia in Dermatology, participating in medical degree examinations both in Italian and English.

In daily clinical practice, he is dedicated to non-invasive dermato-oncologic diagnostics (consultations, mole mapping, in vivo confocal microscopy) and invasive diagnostics (skin biopsies, minor surgical procedures), as well as the treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune skin diseases (psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, lupus, alopecia areata, scleroderma, blistering diseases). He is also the reference dermatologist for managing cutaneous reactions to systemic anticancer drugs and immunotherapies.

Thanks to his expertise in dermatopathology, he has lectured in a Level II Master’s program and serves as an investigator in numerous international clinical trials in dermato-oncology. He is an active member of several scientific societies, including the Italian Task Force for the Study of Cutaneous Reactions during Oncologic Therapy, the Italian Group of Oncologic Dermatology, and the Dermatopathology Group (SIDeMaST).

In basic research, he collaborates with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, studying the mechanisms of melanoma metastasis and the pathogenesis of the pre-metastatic niche through proteomic, lipidomic, and genetic analyses of extracellular vesicles.

He is the author of over 200 international scientific publications and 7 book chapters. A speaker at national and international congresses, he has received 6 national and international scientific awards from prestigious institutions such as:

  • European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (Vienna, Austria)
  • American Academy of Dermatology (Washington D.C., USA)
  • Italian Society of Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (Rome and Milan, Italy)
