Gianfranco Epifanio

Dr. Gianfranco Epifanio is the Head of the Internal Medicine Unit at Villa Erbosa.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Bologna in 1996. He then obtained a Specialization Diploma in Internal Medicine in 2001 and a Second Level Master's Degree in Advanced Digestive Endoscopy in 2004, both from the same university.

From 1989 to 1996, Dr. Epifanio completed a practical internship at the Institute of Special Medical Pathology under the direction of Professor Giovanni Gasbarrini. During this time, he provided clinical assistance and conducted research in the Medical Histopathology Laboratory, focusing on digestive system diseases.

His research particularly focuses on:

• Helicobacter pylori infection
• Gastric cancer
• Celiac disease
• Whipple's disease

Since 1989, Dr. Epifanio has been researching the correlation between Helicobacter pylori cytotoxins and the development of gastric cancer and MALT lymphoma.

His research also delves into:

• Typical endoscopic signs in the duodenal bulb and celiac disease
• Anal and perianal manifestations in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease

Dr. Epifanio regularly participates in national and international conferences and is the author of approximately 70 publications in national and international journals such as GUT, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and others.
