الدكتور باولو راما هو رئيس قسم العيون والقرنية وأمراض سطح العين في مستشفى IRCCS San Raffaele (مستشفى سان رافاييلي) في ميلانو وأستاذ زائر في مدرسة التخصص في طب العيون في جامعة Università degli Studi di Milano (جامعة ميلان).

بعد تخرجه من كلية الطب والجراحة في جامعة Università degli Studi di Padova (جامعة بادوا)، تخصص في طب العيون في جامعة Università degli Studi di Modena (جامعة مودينا). خلال السنة الأكاديمية 1992-1993 أصبح باحثًا علميًا في معهد Wilmer Institute (ويلمر) في جامعة John Hopkins University (جونز هوبكنز) في بالتيمور.

مجالات اهتمامه تشمل أمراض القرنية وسطح العين والأمراض المعدية. من الناحية الجراحية، أجرى أكثر من 9500 عملية جراحية بوصفه المشغل الرئيسي، منها أكثر من 4200 عملية زراعة قرنية.

الدكتور راما نشط جداً في مجال البحث. إنه المحقق الرئيسي في العديد من الدراسات السريرية سواء في إيطاليا أو في الخارج، والتي تجرى وفقًا لمبادئ الممارسات السريرية الجيدة (GCP). خلال مسيرته المهنية اهتم بعامل نمو الأعصاب (NGF) وقد نشر أول توضيح سريري لتطبيق هذا العامل في مجلة New England Journal of Medicine. نشر في عام 2010 نتائج دراسته حول زراعة الخلايا الجذعية المزروعة في علاج حروق القرنية في نفس المجلة.

يشارك الدكتور راما في مؤتمرات وطنية ودولية، وتم نشر مساهماته في مجلات متخصصة مهمة مثل: American Journal of Ophthalmology و Transplantation و Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science و The Journal of Cell Biology و Current Opinion in Ophthalmology و Cornea و Eye Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Ophthalmology و Clinical Genetics و Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences و Current Eye Research و Experimental Eye Research و Journal of Pathology و Trends in Molecular Medicine و British Journal of Ophthalmology و New England Journal of Medicine.
